Want Google to help you with you SEO?

Google Search Engine Optimisation starters GuideOne of the biggest questions I’m asked when presenting web marketing workshops is how SEO works. There seems to be a lot of smoke and mirrors around SEO, how it works and what a website owner needs to do to get top ranking for their websites.

What a lot of people don’t know is that even though Google has created it’s own SEO guide (Strangely, it’s called “Google Search Engine optimization starter Guide“, lol ) for web owners and developers.

It’s literally a step by step How To guide on how to optimise your website, provided directly by Google – this isn’t some SEO guru’s take on what he thinks you should be doing – it’s google’s own Search department telling you exactly what they want to see on your website.

If you’re confused or unsure with all the conflicting information out there from so called “SEO experts” about what you should be doing to optimise your website then this is definitely the best place to start.

Here are a few examples of what some SEO experts say vs google:

SEO Expert: “The description meta tags are useless, google doesn’t use these at all”

Google: “Adding description meta tags to each of your pages is always a good practice in case Google cannot find a good selection of text to use in the snippet”

SEO Experts: “Adding alt descriptions to your images won’t help with your SEO”

Google: ” optimizing your image filenames and alt text makes it easier for image search projects like Google Image Search to better understand your images”

And the list goes on.

Take some time to download and read the Google Search Engine optimization starter Guide before you do anything else with your SEO.
